Prepping your skin for makeup might sound complex and tedious specially if you’re in a rush, but trust me when I say that it makes all the difference. The right skincare will have your base looking stunning and skin-like with fewer products.

If you’re not sure how to use skincare to your advantage before makeup, this article will teach you exactly what you need to do with very simple skincare steps. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Makeup and Skincare are all about having fun and trying new things. Remember that skin texture is normal and should be embraced. Perfection is not the goal—healthy, glowing skin is!

Cleanse your skin:

The first step to any skin prep is to cleanse your skin to remove any dirt and impurities. Make sure you use a gentle cleanser to avoid irritating the skin, rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a clean towel. The key is to use gentle, hydrating products, so I recommend using a water-based cleanser and avoid oil-based cleansers.

Use a toner:

A hydrating toner will act as a base for your serums and bring back the moisture to your skin while helping other products absorb better. Apply it with your hands, soak a cotton pad and gently press it into your skin, or use toner pads.

Some of our favorite toners include Glow recipe’s Watermelon Glow PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner, Rhode’s Glazing milk, and BYOMA milking toner. Or if you prefer toner pads, Mediheal, Skin 1004, and Numbuzin have some great options.

Face serum:

Serums are the best way to refine skin texture and add extra hydration. Serums have different benefits and a thicker consistency compared to toners. However, we recommend sticking with hydrating lightweight serums, as thicker consistencies might affect the foundation/concealer application.

Any serum that contains hyaluronic acid will work perfectly under makeup, our favorites are Torriden DIVE-IN Low-Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum, Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops and The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid serum.

Apply a light moisturizer:

Choose a light moisturizer with a thinner consistency to lock hydration and don’t forget sunscreen! If you think moisturizers might be too much on your skin, we recommend using your sunscreen as a moisturizer.

The key to skin prep is to use lightweight thin products that won’t clog your skin or grab onto your makeup. Make sure to let everything dry and absorb before continuing with any makeup product.

Skincare doesn’t have to be overly complicated. Try these simple skincare steps and you’ll be surprised at how smoothly your makeup application goes and lasts all day.
